The linen felt slightly harder after the fabric dye bath so to soften it I soaked it again, this time in water with baking soda. Normally, I don’t use chemically treated linen and just give the fabric time to soften with regular use and washes. But I also discovered a natural way how to speed up this process, without suppressing the quality of the fibre. If you are looking to: (a) dye a dark garment a lighter color or (b) completely change the color of a garment from one color to another (such as from purple to blue): Then you must first use Rit Color Remover to remove the color from the garment, bringing it to a white or off-white color. You will then have a blank canvas to achieve a true color with whatever dye you choose to use. Once the color is removed, follow the instructions for how to use Rit All-Purpose Dye. Soak the linen fabric (or cotton, or any piece you chose to use for the fabric dye project) in water over night. This way the water will get thoroughly into the fabric and encourage more even colour absorption once you simmer the fabric. Turn off heat and allow the dye bath to return to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Rinse when cool enough to handle. Wear gloves as residual dye can stain skin. Fiber blends with at least 60% cotton or other dyeable fiber (blends will tint evenly but will not achieve full color)Miscellaneous Items: Such as unfinished clay, cement, cork, feathers, fabric lampshades, paraffin (powder dye only), cotton and nylon rope, sand and seashells. When you’re satisfied with the colour shade, remove the pot from the heat, place it into the bath. Let it set for a moment, until the water has coolled down to a reasonable temperature.

Make a custom colour sample: cut a 12" x 12" swatch of fabric and measure dye with a teaspoon or tablespoon. Dissolve Tintex into 1 or 2 cups of very hot water. Each custom colour recipe may include full or partial measurements of teaspoons or tablespoons (example: 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 tsp and/or Tbsp). Adjust the amount of dye as needed to get your desired custom colour. Make Pastels Using Any Tintex Dye Rit Color Remover is used primarily to remove or reduce color from fabric prior to dyeing with Rit Dye. It reduces the color to an off-white or cream color, creating a clean, even base color for dyeing. Color Remover is suitable for use on most washable fabrics, including cotton, linen, rayon, silk, and nylon. It may have a limited effect on polyester, depending upon how it was dyed commercially. Color Remover is a non-chlorine, reductive type of bleach that will not damage or deteriorate washable fabrics as chlorine bleach will. Cut the avocados in half, taking out both pits and removing all flesh. Peel one of the halfs and wash the skin.
