About this deal

The four greater sabbats are the ones that fall exactly between the solstices and equinoxes. It may seem odd to mark the “cross-quarter days” as more fundamental (and greater) than the “quarter days” coming from the sun itself. The Wiccan sabbat Ostara is named for the Saxon goddess Eostre (or Ostara). This festival is about balance, falling on the Spring Equinox when the days and nights are of equal length. Fertility, growth, and renewal are the themes of Ostara. Pagan holidays consist of celebrating and honoring the seasons of Nature wherever we live. It can be as easy or complicated as you choose to make it, just like any other holiday. Ancient Pagans would be filled with hope and fear during Lammas — hopeful for a bountiful harvest, but fearful that it wouldn’t be enough to last the winter. Vetrnaetr – A Norse pagan holiday to honor ancestors and the harvest. It signifies the time to use the meat of the farm animals and start hunting. The Goddess Hela is honored on this night. The Norse also believe the veil between the worlds is thinner during this night.

The four Lesser Sabbats are Ostara, the vernal equinox; Litha, the summer solstice; Mabon, the autumn equinox; and Yule, the winter solstice. These sabbats mark the sun’s position in the sky and are solar festivals, as the Lesser Sabbats are also known as the solar holidays. Beltane, also known as May Day, is one of the four Greater Sabbats. It is observed on May 1st each year, approximately halfway between the spring solstice, Ostara, and the summer solstice, Litha. The ancient Celtic calendar historically established Beltane as the first summer day, although the summer solstice is officially the first summer day in many countries. Pagans celebrate Yule as a time of hope with family and friends. Christmas customs, as well as Yule tradition, are rooted in ancient pagan Midwinter celebrations. Thus, today’s Pagans also enjoy caroling, Yule logs, the exchange of gifts, and many other traditions, old and new. It is also called the Full Hare Moon, the Corn Planting Moon, the Bright Moon, the Blessing Moon and the Milk Moon. Offering the first fruits of the seasons to the gods and goddesses shows gratitude and ensures blessings for the following year. It is a time of thanksgiving. Saturnalia – The most popular of all ancient Roman holiday’s. The Agriculture God Saturn is honored from the 17th through the 23rd. Many of the traditions of this holiday are considered the source of modern-day traditions of Christmas, including wreaths, candles, feasting and exchanging of gifts. They were left with six holidays which felt irregular, so they added the equinoxes to create a harmonious balance. This is why you’ll see the equinoxes with additional names (Ostara and Mabon), but I’ll go more in-depth for each holiday listed below.

This cycle is also viewed as a micro- and macrocosm of other life cycles in an immeasurable series of cycles composing the Universe. The days that fall on the landmarks of the yearly cycle traditionally mark the beginnings and middles of the four seasons. They are regarded with significance and host to major communal festivals. These eight festivals are the most common times for community celebrations. So naturally, they wanted to continue this spiritual belief and include it in their Wiccan faith.
