Later on in the series, (Centurion) we get to see Cato fall in love again, this time with the daughter of a senator called Julia. Julia and her father had been trapped in a citadel but they survived. She promises Cato that she will get married to him at the end of “Centurion”. This second in the "Eagle" series takes place a few months after the first book, and finds the two heroes of the 6th cohort of the 2nd legion, Centurion Macro and Optio Cato, as part of the Roman expeditionary force sent to pacify the British Isles circa 43 AD. The Roman forces are greatly outnumbered by those of the Celtic tribes assembled under Caratacus, and a series of desperate battles and skirmishes ensue. As in the previous book, while the characters are not exactly brimming with depth, there's plenty to learn about Roman military tactics as they fight their way to the far bank of the Thames. He has also written another series,Revolution, focusing on WellingtonandNapoleon, whose first title,Young Bloods, was published in 2006. The second volume,The Generals, was released on 31 May 2007 and the third volumeFire and Swordwas released in January 2009. The fourth and final novel of the series was released in Jun 2010 and is calledThe Fields of Death. He began publishing a new series in 2011 titledGladiator. I thought this was much better than it's predecessor, Under the Eagle. The Eagle's Conquest focuses on the invasion of Britain by the Romans, covering three battles up to the capture of Camulodunum (modern day Colchester, Wikipedia tells me), and the greater scope of the book compared to the first one makes it a lot more exciting.

I think the biggest mistake Simon Scarrow made when writing these books was to make Macro as old as he was at the start, he could’ve easily made him five years younger and it would’ve made no difference to the story or series as a whole. It doesn’t lose the star because of that, but it finally came to a head in this book when Macro departs about a third of the way through to see out his retirement in Britannia, and was obviously gutting as Macro is the best character! He is best known for his Eagles of the Empire series of Roman military fiction set in the territories of the Roman Empire, covering the second invasion of Britain and the subsequent prolonged campaign undertaken by the rump of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. As of March 2023, there are 22 books in the series; the latest, "Rebellion", was published in 2023 [2] Claudius: Emperor of Rome, portrayed in The Eagle's Conquest and Praetorian as a forgetful, half-witted buffoon.The tale starts off with Cato and Macro escorting Queen Boudica of the Iceni towards Londinium to renew her pledge to Rome and its Governor Suetonius, after the death of her husband King Prasutagus of the Iceni, when during that voyage she's robbed of her tribute to Rome by some Roman bandits. Every year, Simon manages to publish at least one book based on the adult Roman and historical fiction novels. The house in which he lives in Norfolk is a 400 year old mansion which was built by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. In fact, the major portion of Norfolk was colonized by the Romans.

Let's talk about Under The Eagle by Simon Scarrow. It's good, in a sort of balls-to-the-wall way. Having read this before, I knew what to expect. Blood, betrayal, lots of swearing and gladius slashing fun. With any historical novel, there's a fine line between historical accuracy and story-telling. Conn Iggulden, as much as I respect him for taking on Caesar is a fine example of bad story-telling set against historical accuracy (which in part is well researched). Simon Scarrow doesn't pretend to be 'historical accurate', yes it is accurate in the sense of being set within the reign of Claudius-I've-The-Mind-Of-A-Child-And-The-Eating-Habit-Of-A-Ox. Yes it is accurate given the timeline, the invasion of Britain was what solidified Claudius's Emperor-ship - without it, he would have been history (ironic).Compare such an invigorating tome with a pair of books where there is precious little depth to any of the characters beyond occasional almost throwaway attempts at adding meat to the character's bones, and you'll hopefully see where I'm disappointed. Simon Scarrow (born 3 October 1962) is a British author. Scarrow completed a master's degree at the University of East Anglia [1] after working at the Inland Revenue, and then went into teaching as a lecturer, firstly at East Norfolk Sixth Form College, then at City College Norwich. Simon is a patron of the Bansang Hospital Appeal which supports an outstandingly innovative hospital in The Gambia. The series, in its entirety, documents Macro and Cato's attempts to live a soldier's simple life, however, their effectiveness as soldiers and Cato's former connections to the Imperial Court make this difficult. Through association with Cato, Macro also finds himself the object of the upper classes' intrigue and struggles for supremacy. The series also features Vespasian and Vitellius as supporting characters, during the formative years of their careers, and foreshadowing their future rivalry for the Imperial throne. Por el contrario ha habido otros como Vitelio , el cual se ha ganado mi desprecio desde que comenzó la saga al ser un personaje tan ruin que no le importa hacer lo que sea para lograr sus objetivos.

I found the descriptions of life in Britain in the I century very interesting and they made me wish I know more about the lifestyle. I go through genre phases, and historical fiction and Greek/Roman philosophy and history is where my mind was focused for a while. I finished studying stoicism and decided to read this novel by Scarrow that has been in my Kindle library for a couple of years. I am glad I did. It was a fascinating read as Boudica’s rebellion is a fascinating topic as it’s also one that changes according to the personal point of view of the reader: feminist ante litteram, nationalist or simply someone who rebelled against the power of the Romans. Sardinia has long been plagued by tribes of bandits living wild in the centre of the island. These proud decedents of the original inhabitants of Sardinia have been causing problems in recent months, raiding the local villages and ambushes caravans. Taking command of Sardinia’s entire garrison, Cato begins to work out a strategy to defeat the locals and regain his position in Rome. However, this proves harder than originally anticipated as Cato needs to contend with a disorganised military force, a dangerous plague that is beginning to overwhelm the island and a surprisingly competent group of bandits with unparalleled knowledge of the local landscape. Worse, Cato begins to have dangerous feelings for Claudia, feelings which his enemies will exploit and which could set the entirety of Rome against him. Can Cato pacify Sardinia before his entire force is decimated, or have his adventures finally come to an end? Simon Scarrow’s twentieth book in the series featuring Centurion Macro and his friend Cato sees the focus turn to Britannia, as Macro, now retired, joins his mother in Londinium.

But the good news for me is I have many unread books to get through in this series😉 This is the twentieth book in the Eagles of the Empire Series, and as usual an excellent read. Full of great characters and with a real sense of life in the Roman Empire. Simon Scarrow is a popular novelist from the United Kingdom, who is best known for his novels based on the Historical Fiction genre. Till date, he has written a total of 5 novel series’ and the most notable novel series written by him is the Eagle Series. The most torturous part? The fact I know I have almost ten more books in this series before it'll be complete (or at least up to date) without even including the various tangential off-shoots.

Some underestimated and some not so much. If you enjoy history and the thriller genre this should definitely be on your list to read.

In Camulodunum Macro will meet other veterans under the leadership of Magistrate Ramirus, and they will have a severe battle against the Trinovantes tribe, where they are left to their own devices by a coward of a procurator called, Decianus Catus, and where they have to fight for their lives to reach their stronghold again, while not much later on Cato will make his appearance in Camulodunum with his son, Julius, and his woman, Claudia Acte, the supposed dead ex-mistress of Emperor Nero, and right from the start Cato is making plans to set things right for Macro and his family in Londinium.
