Next, I put in the pineapple chunks, including the tough core and gave them a blitz, which soon cut the mixture down. Next, there’s the new 400ml Power Nutri Bowl, which takes the same blade assembly, but also has a storage lid. You’ll also notice its Smart Torque twice dial, which is at the bottom of the bowl when stood up, but becomes the top when inserted into the main base. You can put all of the parts, bar the base, into the dishwasher, so there’s very little mess to deal with, either. Performance Everything is plastic, but it feels robust and hard-wearing. There are nice touches, too. The jug has a clever flip-down lid that prevents liquid from flying out, for example, and the cup has a travel cup lid, so you can blend and go. To see how well the CB100UK performs, I put it through a series of tests. First, I started with ice crushing, filling the self-serve cup with ice cubs. Using the Crush Auto IQ programme, I soon had a cup full of powdered snow-like ice, with no big chunks left behind. You want to make large batches: While there are two 700ml single-serve cups included in the box, for a bigger household, a multi-use blender such as the Ninja 3-in-1 Food Processor with Auto-IQ BN800UK may be a better option since it comes with an extra 2.1-litre blending jug. If you’ve seen a recent Ninja blender, then you won’t find the CB100UK a million miles away. The main unit is the powered motor base, into which you clip the provided accessories. For this model, there’s a 1100W motor, down from the 1200W motor in the BN750UK. As you’ll see later, this doesn’t make much difference in practice – the less powerful motor is fine since you’ll only ever be working with smaller volumes of food. Adding to the coconut flakes, I put in pineapple chunks (including the core), mint leaves, yoghurt and coconut milk. Using the Blend option, I ended up with a perfect smoothie, with no large chunks left and the mint and coconut spread evenly through the mix. In the box, Ninja provides a 2.1-litre jug for larger mixes, a 700ml travel cup with lid, and the 400ml Power Nutri Bowl. The jug has both a large blade assembly and a dough hook; the latter two attachments use the same blade assembly.

Ninja also prides itself on the fact that this blender can cope with some serious ingredients without rattling away on your worktop, or having to be held in place. The plastic parts can be placed in the dishwasher and stubborn residues can be whizzed off with soapy water in the blending cup. The inclusion of no-spill lids means you can secure a cup after blending, pop it in your bag and consume whilst out and about. In the box, Ninja has provided its robust single-serve cup, which holds up to 700ml of liquid. This has both a blade assembly and, when you’re finished mixing, a travel lid that you can screw on and drink out of. You’re keen to experiment with flavours: Pretty much anything goes when you’re making a smoothie in this design – from tough ingredients such as pineapple chunks and unwaxed lemon peel, to finer items such as spinach and seeds. As with recent Ninja blenders, the base comes with Auto IQ programmes, to take the guesswork out of blending. There are auto settings for Blend, Crush, Mix and PowerMix; the handy manual offers a guide on when to use each mode. There’s a basic Start/Stop control and a Pulse option, too.

While it may be noisy, when it comes to performance, the CB350UK is exceptionally good. I first tried to crush ice, in both the jug and travel cup. With the Crush programme, I soon had a lot of powdered ice with the texture of snow, and no large lumps of ice. We liked the 700ml capacity of the cup, which made for a filling post-gym smoothie, and vastly preferred the travel cap to the standard lid provided with many blenders, as it made it easier to drink on the go. It was also completely leak-proof. If there’s one thing I don’t like about Ninja blenders, it’s that they’re very loud. Here, the CB350UK peaked at 97.1dB –which is louder than a tube train passing. Although you’ll only use it for short periods, the level of noise is uncomfortable. For a lot of jobs, I preferred to use the Auto-iQ programmes, which allowed me to walk away from the machine while it was blending. To finish off, I added coconut milk, yoghurt and mint leaves. Using the Blend option, I ended up with a perfect smoothie: you can see small chunks of coconut and traces of mint, but the overall drink was smooth, free of large chunks. As with other Ninja Blenders that I’ve reviewed recently, the Ninja Foodi Power Nutri Blender 2-in-1 with Smart Torque & Auto-iQ CB100UK is super-loud. I measured it at a peak of 97.3dB – that’s louder than an underground train. Admittedly, you’ll be running this blender for only short periods, but it’s not pleasant to stand next to while it’s doing its thing.

Oats and seeds in a smoothie or sprinkled on top not only add texture but help you feel fuller for longer. Previous Ninja blenders have been good, with the main difference between models being the accessories that ship alongside and the Auto-iQ programmes available. For those not in the know, Auto-iQ is Ninja’s system of running the blender automatically for different jobs. Next, I made a smoothie. First, I took some coconut flakes and attempted to grind them to see how well the CN100UK copes with dry ingredients. In short, not very well. The high speed of the motor tends to throw the bits into the air, giving uneven results. If you need to grind spices or work with dry ingredients, this isn’t the blender for you.

How we tested

Each attachment can be used with the automatic programme, but you can override this with manual settings, using pulse or running the blender entirely manually. While the cup and bowl run at maximum speed only, there’s a choice of 10 speeds with the jug, giving much finer control. Adding dates (without stones) or dried apricots to a smoothie not only sweetens the mixture but adds fibre too. While budget blenders can handle soft fruits and liquids fine, it often pays to spend a bit more knowing that your new blender will be able to work its way through tougher ingredients like hard veg or even – for the top models – ice cubes. Don’t throw away that ripe banana, cut into slices and freeze for smoothies and shakes, the ripeness will add natural sweetness too.
