About this deal

My biggest concern is the impressionable people reading this book, the young women who think this is an accurate reflection of what needs to happen to the TERF’s of the world having their reasoning that trans women are just men finding another way to abuse women, validated. Men, it seems, have destroyed the economy and, with nowhere to go, Miranda and Emma head for Femlandia. It couldn't have been fun for him, but I have a hard time feeling sympathy for a man who saw an easy way out and took it, leaving us with no car, no furniture, and no cash.

My mouth waters just thinking about that steak, glistening with butter, charred on the outside, pink and perfect in the center. They curse for the fifth time on this early-May morning and push the pillow-topped Tempur-Pedic slab into the last remaining space while Emma and I watch from the porch. Although it advertises itself as paradise, it soon becomes apparent that things are not as they appear. It’s still well written, smart, shocking, dark and I think the fans of the author who can absorb dark, bleak sci-fi concepts will enjoy it a lot! A master of the feminist dystopian novel…A no-holds-barred thriller and thought-provoking read for fans of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Naomi Alderman’s The Power, and Kim Liggett’s The Grace Year.

Femlandia, Christina Dalcher's third novel, ends up being both misogynistic and misanthropic, with a bit of lesbophobia thrown in for good measure.

And those XX chromosomes identifying one as ‘female’ turn up frequently through the rest of the story. Again, this is a very difficult book to read so if you upset easily reading about abuse of any kind, skip it. This was a society that she had set up nineteen years ago with her deputy, Jennifer Jones, and now fifteen US states have a Femlandia community, with ten more planned. It's only flaw would be how limited in depth the book was in terms of scene setting and character development.

The community has huge electric barbed wire fences surrounding it but was this to keep people out or to keep the women inside? On paper, it looked interesting, but I failed to engage with the characters and struggled with this. Then we drove home, got to business for the first time as husband and wife, and cozied up on the sofa with popcorn in time to see my mother on the television.
