In this book, Poe's friend Estelle Doyle appears to be guilty of her father's murder. All signs point to her guilt, but she's said just three words since her arrest: “Tell Washington Poe.” How could Poe have gotten it so wrong? Did he put away an innocent man – and worse yet, did his actions lead to years of misery for the young woman? Before he can get to the bottom of it, she goes missing again.A well-known and outspoken misogynist dies during an interview on television. He seems to have been poisoned. In the investigation following his death, a pressed flower and an odd poem are found among his belongings as well as the envelope in which they were sent to him. Very few mourned his death but Poe is a cop and it is his job to solve mysteries such as this one.

Dead Man's Fingers– During a picnic at a nature reserve, Poe's dog Edgar chases a rabbit. Chasing after him, they stumble on a decades-old unsolved mystery. Every time I see a new M.W Craven - Washington Poe novel is released I start to wonder is this the one that isn’t so good… Well rest assured this isn’t that novel and I am starting to think I could read about Poe and Tilly forever and just live happily until the end of time. 🤗 Characters -- 3 stars -- there isn't much character development or interesting characterization; the characters are an interesting bunch, but most are based on cliche: a female scientist with the brain of a genius and zero social skills; a tough and lonely down-to earth policeman with troubled past; a sexy, mysterious and super-clever pathologist; an evil genius criminal etc. There’s Jared Keaton, who used to be quite in demand as a chef catering to the stars. He was known for being charming and charismatic. He also happens to be a psychopath. Jared is in the process of serving a life sentence for murdering his daughter Elizabeth. While her body was ultimately never discovered, it was Detective Sergeant Washington Poe’s testimony that helped him get convicted. Poe is a Detective Sargeant in the hinterlands of northern England. He, his everpresent brilliant digital genius and their boss, DCI Stephanie Flynn (who once worked for Poe, prior to his suspension for behavior inappropriate to his job. Now he works for her and everyone seems to find that very workable although there is a lot of kvetching. But that is largely because Poe is intolerant of many things, like those people who do not agree with him and he clearly does not suffer fools gladly so he frequently pisses off others.DCI Harry Grimm has been reassigned from Bristol up to rural North Yorkshire. Despite the fact that only a couple hundred miles separate the two locations, the cultural shift is huge. Apart from my slight rub, this was another great story from Craven with superb character development superb and another expertly written book by the master of suspense. In the first book in the series, we meet DS Cross as he's trying to solve the murder of a man in Bristol's homeless community. Though others dismiss the death as a “homeless squabble”, Cross sees it for what it is – a murder that goes far deeper than a random misunderstanding on the streets. After two minutes Bradshaw stood up and said, ‘I have two favourite dogs now, Poe. Do you think we could train Edgar to sniff out guns?’

Storyline and Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The plot was gripping and written at a pace that controlled and intensified the feeling of fear and terror. I loved that the book was unpredictable and it was only towards the end that the reader could piece together all the treads of the story. As it should be in crime novels. M.W. Craven is an accomplished author of fiction. He is an English writer known for his crime fiction novels. The Botanist is a fun book that I very much enjoyed reading. I'm not certain whether four or five stars are appropriate so I'll base my rating on the degree to which I enjoyed it. If you like cop investigations with a bit of mirth, I would strongly recommend this book BUT, as always, I suggest that you start with the first book in the series. Washington Poe is a disgraced detective that has been on suspension/ However, his name has also been found carved into a third victim’s charred out remains, and the police figure it’s a start. So they bring him out of suspension and put him into active duty once more, assigning Poe into an investigation that he doesn’t even want to be a part of. There are few things more pleasurable than reading the first book in a great series and realising you have more books to look forward to. Whether you're in a book drought or just looking for something new to add to your TBR (to be read) pile, you're sure to find some great contenders below. 7 Gritty British Crime Novel Series to Try This Summer Tim Sullivan's DS Cross Series The Dentist (2021)

The series was optioned for TV by Studio Lambert in 2017, a full year before The Puppet Show was published, and things are progressing nicely. However, because I know the actors the studio wants, that’s all I can see when I picture who would play Poe and Tilly. After The Curator, we have three short stories out in September, where Poe and Tilly are dealing with social distancing and self-isolation because of the coronavirus, and a new novel next year, when they go up against a man called the Botanist. He’s a sneaky so-and-so . . .
